We are so delighted to be working with our long-standing Manchester music facilitator and beatboxer Naeim Alnajjar who recently was able to go back home to Syria for the first time in 14 years. Whilst there, he connected with local Syrian musicians and created a new Music Action International collaboration engaging local young people with singing and beatboxing. See a session in action in this video!

Heres what Naeim, and local Syrian musicians Nour Eddin Zaytoun (@nour_eddin_zaytoun), Fadi Omran (@fadi_grooves), Mohamad Rihawi (@mohammad.rehawi) had to say about the experience:

The atmosphere of the first session was lively, curious, and highly engaged. There was a strong sense of openness in the room, with participants feeling comfortable to experiment, contribute ideas, and support one another. Energy levels remained high throughout, with moments of focused listening balanced by active participation.

Every day, we gathered in a large circle and began with physical warm-up exercises, followed by breathing exercises for singing and beatboxing, then vocal warm-ups. After that, we introduced exercises that relate closely to the musical pieces we are practicing. Everyone was excited about the new pieces and listened attentively to the professional notes, which focus on artistic and aesthetic aspects.

Behind the scenes at our creative music session

We had discussions around the small but important details that add beauty and magic to the wonderful blend we achieved.Participants responded enthusiastically to the activities, collaborated well with each other, and showed clear progression in confidence and expression as the project developed. The structure of the session allowed everyone to participate regardless of prior experience, which helped create an inclusive and encouraging environment.

The project highlighted human voice as a tool for connection and self-expression. One participant commented that the session made them feel “more confident to use my voice without worrying about being judged,” which strongly reflects the impact of the work. Partner organisation staff also noted the positive shift in group dynamics and engagement compared to the start of the sessions.

We were proud to be able to create a sense of magic and harmony by combining traditional singing, choir, and beatboxing. It is very rewarding to see the participants experiencing the fruits of their efforts and truly enjoying the unique blend we have created.

The final performance was at the beautiful Baik Bash hotel in Damascus.
