“Shum” is a modern Ukrainian song which is inspired by an ancient Ukrainian spring song and roundelay dance with the same name. “Vesnyanochka” means “spring song”. The word “shum” means noise in Ukrainian, but in many Slavic languages shum means “forest”. The song is divided into 2 sections in terms of singing. The words change as the song progresses, but we’re going to learn the first verse and the chorus.
Here, you’ll see Dina explaining the story behind the song; it’s meaning and history. She also teaches you the catchy chorus!
Here, she runs through the harmony drone in the chorus. It’s called the drone harmony because it’s mostly sung on 1 note.
Dina goes teachers and sings the verses with you!
Finally, she sings the whole song with you! This time we’re starting with the verse and going into the chorus
You can sing the song a cappella using a click or clap to keep the rhythm steady. Alternatively, it’s really fun to play the chords on guitar or piano.
