You can now listen online to the powerful and thought provoking Greengross Global Arts 4 Brain Health Change Makers REFUGEE Conversation, recorded for Refugee Week. Hosted by Veronica Arts, the discussion explores the transformative role of the arts in supporting safety seekers, and those who have experienced trauma.
Lis Murphy and Ramsey Janini from Music Action International joined a series of compelling conversations by speakers from arts organisations who use creative practices that support people affected by trauma, torture and displacement. Lis and Ramsey shared how our trauma-informed approach, such as our Crisis Choirs sessions, create safe spaces in collaboration with our incredible partners, clinical psychologists, refugees and safety seekers, and Global Majority communities.
The event highlighted how at any stage of a safety seeker’s journey – whether in camps, after arrival, in day centres and accommodation, resettlement or long term survival – the arts open vital opportunities for expression, healing and rebuilding resilience.
It was really key for us in the beginning that people with lived experiences were at all levels of the organisation and in the facilitation team. Lis Murphy, Creative Director of Music Action International
This was an inspiring and insightful conversation featuring contributions from organisations Arts4Dementia, Art Refuge, Community Table, Counterpoints Arts, Freedom From Torture, World Health Organiation, and University of East London.
We are working from the participants experiences and languages, so we have a repertoire of music which has been written in different programmes…it’s a mix of engaging people in their own languages, but also about sharing languages. Ramsey Janini, Creative Producer of Music Action International
