We are horrified by the violent attacks which have spread across the country in the last week, including the targeting of safety seekers forced to live in temporary accommodation by the Home Office, due to wasteful and punishing asylum system policies. We stand in solidarity with anyone living in fear of being targeted due to their religion, ethnicity or country of origin.
These events are the result of years of politicised racism, Islamophobia and anti-refugee hostility, where those with less power are being deliberately blamed for years of economic hardship and political failures.
We are concerned about the impact the rising hatred will have on our participants, and remain committed to building inclusive communities where everyone is free from fear and discrimination. Today we’ve signed a letter to the government urging Parliament to be recalled to address the scale of the crisis, and ensure that communities are protected.
We are heartened by the examples of people unified in standing against violence across the country. Everyone forced to flee their home in search of safety should be met with compassion and understanding, so that they can feel safe and supported as they recover and rebuild their lives after experiencing war and persecution.
